Back in March of 2016, the Internet was abuzz for a few days with a video of Keanu Reeves (which you can see below) training at Taran Tactical Innovations with champion shooter and world-class instructor, Taran Butler, for the movie John Wick: Chapter 2, which came out this year.
In the video, Reeves ran through a live-fire 3-Gun course, hitting 19 of 19 targets with some pretty impressive speed, showing that he was as dedicated to his firearms training for the films as he had been about his martial arts training for the Matrix series.
The folks at Buzzfeed were fascinated by the clip and decided to send two staffers to TTI, get some instruction from Butler, and see if they could approach Reeve’s time as shooting novices.
Josh Davis and Sherial McKinney got some abbreviated training for the day from Butler himself, starting with all the basics of shooting before moving on to live-fire exercises, and eventually to lessons on drawing and reholstering a pistol and transitioning from one firearm to another safely while still hitting targets downrange.
When it was all said and done, after running through the same course, neither Davis nor McKinney could accomplish the goal of beating Reeves’ time from the video clip that got this whole thing started, but they both did very well for their first day shooting 3-Gun…and one of them got pretty close.
In John Wick: Chapter 2, not only did Reeves get his training from TTI, but he also uses a bunch of their customized guns on screen, including a Combat Master Performance Package customized Glock 34 pistol, a TTI TR-1 AR-style carbine, a TTI customized G26 backup pistol, and a TTI Benelli M4 Super 90 shotgun. Check out all the guns from the new blockbuster action movie here.
