Gun Science: Home Defense Ammo Penetration Test
We compared the effects of handgun, shotgun, and rifle ammo on construction materials used in most homes. What we found was surprising.
Do you know what will happen to the rounds you keep in you home defense firearm if they should miss their target and head into the structure of your home beyond?
The standard argument goes that rifle ammo will tear through drywall like crazy, whereas less speedy handgun bullets would be stopped by building materials more readily, but is that how it works?
We set up a course mimicking common household walls constructed of drywall to see what exactly happens to bullets from a handgun and a rifle, and a slug from a shotgun, as they start going through layer after layer. What we found might surprise you.
