Gun Science: Testing the “Knockdown Power” of Handguns
You hear about knockdown power and see it taken to an extreme in the movies, but it has little to do with the “oopmf” of a given cartridge.
You’ve seen what is actually a false notion of knockdown power in movies and TV for as long as you’ve been watching them. Just think of any time you’ve seen a full-grown man blasted 20 feet through the air by a single shotgun blast. If you have even the most rudimentary grasp of physics, you know this isn’t possible.
In this Gun Science installment, we show how much “knockdown power,” meaning sheer force, is inflicted on a weighted dummy. Can any of the pistol calibers we tested even tip the test subject over?
