IWI Announces Tavor Bullpup in 7.62
The new rifle, dubbed the 7 AR, has a control layout like the X95 and is expected to hit stores Q1 of 2018.
It wasn’t too long ago that IWI introduced the X95 version of it’s popular bullpup Tavor rifle platform. Since then, the X95 has replaced the slightly bulkier, more Euro-centric designed Tavor SAR model.
Now, it looks like we know what the company will have on the firing line at SHOT Show 2018.
IWI has announced the introduction of the Tavor 7 AR, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO (.308 Win.)
It looks a lot like a melding of the SAR and X95 models, as it’s a regular Tavor with everything elongated a bit from the 5.56 models to compensate for the larger cartridges.
This story from guns.com says the 7 AR is being marketed currently to military and law enforcement, but it’s all-but-guaranteed based on the popularity of the Tavor that this new rifle will be headed to the civilian market in short order.
The 7 AR isn’t listed on the IWI USA website yet, but we do have some details. The forend of the 7 AR includes two M-LOK slots at 3 and 9 o’clock and a rail at 6 o’clock for a bevy of accessory and optics arrangements.
There are two barrel length options, 17- and 20-inch and four colors, Sniper Gray, OD Green, Black, and Flat Dark Earth. Overall length is listed as 28.4 inches, but it doesn’t say which barrel length that includes (likely the 17-incher).
All controls are fully ambidextrous and are laid out like the X95’s controls, which will be immediately familiar to AR-platform shooters. Additionally, the ejection port and charging handle can be reversed to accommodate left-handed shooters.
The MSRP has not been listed yet.
“We are pleased to expand the TAVOR family – the world’s most popular battle-proven bullpup rifles – with the new addition of a 7.62X51mm caliber weapon, based on requests from our customers,” said Shlomi Sabag, IWI’s CEO in a release. “The IWI TAVOR 7 enables users from the military and law enforcement markets to operate in a wide variety of scenarios at short and medium range with enhanced firepower – efficiently, safely and easily, with only minimal maintenance. Based on what we have already heard from the field, we expect the IWI TAVOR 7 to become a leader in its category. The weapon will be available from the first quarter of 2018.”
