Members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League says their answer to an important question was substantially changed in a new anti-gun documentary.
We reported earlier this month that Katie Couric cut the entirety of a four-hour interview with pro-gun researcher John Lott, Jr. for her recently released anti-gun documentary “Under the Gun,” directed by Stephanie Soechtig. Now, it has come to light that Couric may have “intentionally and significantly changed the response of Virginia Citizens Defense League members” in the doc, according to this post on ammoland.com.
A member of the VCDL traveled to Washington, DC to be taped for two-hour interview with Couric on April 13, 2015. That interview, plus two other interviews with VCDL members taped at later times, were cut down to a mere four minutes. During that small bit, one question and response was altered.
“Watching the video, you hear Katie ask, “If there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorist from walking into, say, a licensed gun dealer and purchasing a gun?” The camera then shows the group members TOTALLY SILENT FOR EIGHT SECONDS. The camera zooms in on one member, who looks down.
“The clear implication is that none of the group had an answer for that question and was being evasive and avoiding eye contact.
The full audio recording of the interview reveals something different.
“The truth is, and as you will hear in the audio, below, that the group responded to Katie immediately, with answers to her question! Yet the video shows no one responding. Clearly, when Katie didn’t get the answer(s) she wanted, she changed the group’s answers by replacing them with other video of the group sitting around quietly between questions.
“In essence Katie lied about the VCDL members’ answers. If she so cavalierly lied in this instance, what other things did she alter in this movie or any of her previous reporting to advance her own personal agenda?”
You can hear the full audio of the interviews in the Ammoland post here.
If you choose, you can watch what the VCDL is calling “Katie Couric’s gun control infomercial” here. It is being promoted as a fair and balanced exploration of the issue of gun control in America, but since it debuted earlier this year, many on the gun-rights side of the fence have been claiming it is quite biased.
