Florida Governor Rick Smith’s pen was running hot on Thursday, as he signed 44 new bills into law. One of them provides a 48-hour grace period to allow unpermitted gun owners to take their weapons with them during a mandatory evacuation, whether it be the result of a hurricane or other emergency.
According to this story on jacksonville.com:, sponsors of the bill said it was inspired by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina a decade ago, when police seized hundreds of unpermitted guns.
That 48-hour window can be extended by the governor if necessary.
This video posted on YouTube by the NRA in 2007 shows victims of gun confiscation during Katrina telling their stories and reinforces the reasonability and necessity of this new law.
