As a testament to the place the 6.5 Creedmoor round has carved in the shooting world, Springfield Armory has announced three variants of its famed M1A rifle chambered for the versatile, long-range round.

The new chambering for the previously .308-only rifle makes the M1A platform a potentially 1,000-yard gun, if paired with the right optics and bipod.

"Having a 6.5 Creedmoor caliber in the M1A lineup gives long-range shooters more choices with the precision and accuracy they require," says Springfield Armory CEO Dennis Reese in this post from americanrifleman.com. "They can choose the round they prefer, and take advantage of the legendary accuracy of the M1A platform to make the most of their shooting prowess."

The new rifle is offered with a solid black composite stock, which also makes the rifle California compliant.

It is also offered with the company’s precision-adjustable stock with a pistol grip in black or flat dark earth.

All three models come with one 10-round magazine and feature a 22-inch medium weight stainless steel barrel with a 4-groove 1:8” right twist and a muzzle brake.

The two-stage trigger is Nation Match tuned to 4.5—5 lbs.

MSRP: $1985 to $2045.

A little history on the. M1A:

The rifle was designed in 1974 as a civilian version of the M14 rifle, which in turn was an updated version of the M1 Garand battle rifle.

Early M1A rifles were built using surplus military rifle parts until Springfield began making their own.

The differences are slight. M14 and M1A receivers are made through a different process. Until the late 1990s, Springfield M1A included the cutout in the rear right of the stock for the selector switch found on the M14

When the Federal Assault Weapons Ban went into effect in 1994, the M1A began shipping without a bayonet lug, which were prohibited. The feature was not restored after the law expired in 2004. If you want a lug on your M1A, you can just install an older flash suppressor that includes one.

The M1A also ships with a muzzle brake instead of a flash suppressor, because the latter are illegal in certain states.

All Springfield M1As, up to this point, have been chambered for the versatile .308 Win / 7.62 NATO, so chambering the robust and reliable rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor makes sense, as many see the cartridge as the successor to the .308 in terms of versatility, while offering superior ballistics and long-range performance.
