Target shooters have very different priorities when it comes to firearm design than, say, a concealed carrier. That is extremely evident when you see a gun like the new Ruger Mark IV Target pistol with an extended 10-inch barrel.
A long barrel does two things: it adds time in the bore for the bullets when they are fired, which theoretically develops a more stable flying bullet with a bit more velocity, and it increases the sight radius, which is the distance between the rear sight and the front sight, making it more accurate.
Of course, this also adds weight to the gun, which is a good thing when it comes to target shooting if you know how to manage it and you’ve trained enough that it will not fatigue you. All that weight is on the front of the gun, but the angle of the grip on the Mark IV makes that easier to manage as well and it helps decrease muzzle flip for faster reacquisition of your sight picture.
Like the other Mark IV models, the long-barreled version features simple, one-button takedown for quick and easy field-stripping and proper chamber-to-muzzle cleaning. The Mark series has long been a favorite of rimfire shooters, but Mark I through Mark III versions all had the same problem—they were a pain in the neck to take apart, especially when they were dirty, and especially the Mark III.
On the Mark IV, you simply press a button in the back of the frame allowing the barrel and receiver assembly to tilt up and off the grip frame without the use of tools. And it’s that simple.
New Long Barrel Mark IV is available with a blued or satin stained finish and both models have a heavy bull barrel.
While previous generations of the pistol have been offered in a long-barrel configuration, this is the first time the Mark IV has gotten this treatment.
You can see the Mark IV Target Long Barrel in action in this video:
The Ruger Mark IV Target Long Barrel features include a one-piece, precision CNC-machined grip frame; a cold hammer-forged barrel results in ultra-precise rifling that provides exceptional accuracy and longevity; ergonomic bolt stop; smoothly contoured, comfortable grip features a natural pointing grip angle with replaceable grip panels for a non-slip hold; internal cylindrical bolt construction ensures permanent sight-to-barrel alignment and higher accuracy potential than conventional moving-slide designs.
The pistol also includes a contoured ejection port and easy-to-grasp bolt ears allow for durable and reliable operation round after round; accurate sighting system features a drilled and tapped receiver for Weaver- or Picatinny-style rail for easy mounting of optics; ambidextrous manual safety can be converted to left-side only with included washer; a conveniently located push-button magazine release on the left side of the frame; magazine drops free on release for convenient reloading; magazine disconnect prevents discharge when the magazine has been removed; and it ships with two, 10-round magazines.
